Get More From Your Engine
Petrol Engine Tuning Done Right
Every petrol engine leaves the factory with conservative settings. Manufacturers set the ECU (engine control unit) to work across a wide range of conditions, fuel grades and climates, which means there’s almost always room to improve. Petrol tuning adjusts the way your engine manages fuel delivery, ignition timing, and air fuel ratio to get the best performance out of your specific vehicle.
The result? More power and torque through the rev range, sharper throttle response, and in many cases, improved fuel efficiency. Whether you drive a naturally aspirated car, a turbo petrol 4WD, or a high-performance street machine, a professional petrol tune can make a real difference to how your vehicle drives.
At Redline Automotive, we don’t use generic off-the-shelf maps. Every petrol tune we deliver is custom-calibrated on our in-house dyno, tailored to your engine, your modifications, and your goals.
Tuned for Darwin's Conditions
Darwin’s heat puts real demands on petrol engines, especially turbocharged ones. High intake air temperatures reduce power output and increase the risk of detonation, which is why a tune calibrated in a southern state often falls short up here.
We tune every petrol vehicle in the conditions it’s actually going to drive in, with safety margins built in for hot days, long highway runs and stop-start traffic around town. That means a calibration that holds up through the build-up, the wet, and everything in between, not just on a perfect 25-degree dyno day.
ECU Remapping for Petrol Engines
Petrol tuning starts with ECU remapping. Your engine’s control unit manages ignition timing, fuel injection, throttle response, and (on turbocharged vehicles) boost pressure. By adjusting these parameters, we can increase power and torque while keeping the engine running safely within its limits.
For naturally aspirated petrol engines, tuning focuses on improving the air-fuel ratio and ignition maps to deliver smoother, more responsive power. For turbo petrol vehicles, there’s more to work with. We can adjust boost control, fuel delivery, and ignition timing together to deliver significant gains in both power and drivability.
We use Haltech engine management systems for vehicles that need a standalone ECU, giving us full control over every aspect of engine tuning. For factory ECU vehicles, our remapping process is thorough. We read the existing map, make adjustments on the dyno, and verify the results with data logging and wideband air fuel ratio monitoring to make sure the engine is running at its best.
Unlike generic flash tunes that apply the same map to every car, our process is calibrated to your specific engine, your modifications and how you actually drive. We monitor knock activity, boost control on turbo vehicles, and air-fuel ratios throughout the tuning process. The result is a tune that’s safe and reliable, not just powerful on paper.
Dyno-Verified Results You Can Trust
A petrol tune is only as good as the results it delivers. That’s why every tune we do at Redline is verified on our in-house dyno. We measure power and torque before and after tuning so you can see exactly what your vehicle has gained.
Dyno tuning also lets us fine-tune the calibration in real time. We can monitor air fuel ratio, exhaust gas temperatures, and ignition timing under load to make sure your engine is producing optimal power safely. This is especially important for vehicles with performance upgrades like turbo kits, intercoolers, exhaust systems, or intake modifications, where the tune needs to account for increased airflow and fuel demands.
2025 Ford Ranger Raptor: Stage 2 Performance Tune
This Raptor came in already running a Process West intercooler and piping kit and a Fabulous Fabrications airbox, but the factory calibration was holding the setup back. We fitted a Manta twin 3-inch turbo-back exhaust and delivered a full custom Stage 2 dyno tune to bring everything together.
- Factory calibration: 285 HP / 443 Nm
- After Redline Stage 2 tune: 370 HP / 625 Nm
- Gains: +30% power, +41% torque
- Big jump in throttle response, power delivery, and overall drivability, with safe and repeatable results.
2014 Holden VF SSV Commodore: Walkinshaw Supercharged LS3
This Walkinshaw-supercharged VF came in with a misfire and drivability issues after being tuned elsewhere. We diagnosed a faulty earth and recalibrated the vehicle from the ground up.
- After Redline custom tune: 581 HP / 813 Nm
- Smooth, predictable power and consistent performance even in NT heat, where heat soak commonly catches supercharged combinations out.
2008 Holden VE SS Commodore: Camshaft Package & Custom Tune
This VE SS came in with a lifter tick and left as a properly built street car. We pulled the engine, replaced worn cam bearings, did an in-house valve job, fitted a full-performance camshaft package, then put it on the dyno for a custom tune.
- After Redline performance upgrades: 414 HP / 511 Nm
- Strong power and torque gains from the cam package, with street manners retained.
Real Results From Our Workshop
Real Gains, Not Guesswork
- More Power and Torque. Measurable, dyno-verified gains in power and torque across the rev range, not just at peak RPM. You’ll feel the difference in everyday driving.
- Sharper Throttle Response. Remove the sluggish factory throttle calibration for a car that responds the way you want it to.
- Better Fuel Economy. A well-tuned engine runs more efficiently. Expect noticeable improvements during steady-state driving, like highway cruising.
- Works With Your Upgrades. If you’ve fitted a turbo kit, exhaust system, intake, or intercooler, a custom tune makes sure your engine takes full advantage of those modifications.
Tuning the Platforms Darwin Drivers Love
Some engines have a cult following for good reason, and we’ve spent years working on the platforms locals know and trust.
- LS Engines. Whether it’s a swap, a built motor or a factory LS in a Commodore or ute, we tune them all. Cammed setups, forced induction LS builds and street-driven daily drivers all welcome.
- Barra Engines. The legendary inline-six found in Falcon and Territory turbo models. We’ve built and tuned plenty of Barras, from mild street tunes to high-horsepower forged builds.
- Toyota Petrol. From the 2JZ to modern turbo four-cylinders, we handle Toyota petrol tuning with the same care we apply to our own race builds.
- Other Platforms. Nissan SR and RB, Ford Coyote, Subaru EJ and FA, Mazda turbo platforms and more. If it runs on petrol, chances are we’ve tuned one.
Not sure if your engine is on the list? Give us a call. We’ve worked on plenty of platforms that didn’t make the highlights.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is petrol tuning and how does it work?
Petrol tuning is the process of adjusting your engine’s ECU to improve how it manages fuel delivery, ignition timing, and air fuel ratio. The goal is to get more performance, better throttle response, and improved efficiency from your existing engine. We do this through ECU remapping, with every tune calibrated and verified on our dyno.
Will a petrol tune improve my fuel efficiency?
In many cases, yes. By adjusting the air-fuel ratio and ignition maps to run more efficiently, a well-calibrated petrol tune can reduce fuel consumption. The biggest improvements are usually seen during steady-state driving, like highway cruising.
How much power can I expect from a petrol tune?
Petrol gains vary significantly based on your engine, fuel quality and existing modifications. A naturally aspirated tune typically delivers more modest gains focused on throttle response and drivability, while a turbo petrol with supporting mods can see substantial increases. We’ll always quote realistic, dyno-verified figures specific to your vehicle, never inflated marketing claims.
Is petrol tuning safe for my engine?
When done by experienced professionals using proper dyno equipment, absolutely. We monitor air fuel ratio, exhaust gas temperatures, and engine load throughout the tuning process to make sure everything stays within safe limits. We don’t chase numbers at the expense of reliability.
Do I need other modifications before getting a petrol tune?
Not necessarily. A tune on a completely stock vehicle will still deliver noticeable improvements in power and throttle response. That said, if you’ve already fitted performance upgrades like an exhaust system, intake, or turbo kit, a custom tune will make sure your engine is getting the most from those parts.
How is petrol tuning different from diesel tuning?
When you change hardware – such as a turbo, exhaust, intake, injectors, or camshaft – the factory ECU software no longer matches your setup. Without recalibration, your engine may run rich or lean, lose power, waste fuel, or operate in conditions that risk damage. A dyno tune recalibrates the ECU to work with your new components, ensuring you get the full benefit of your upgrades and that everything works together as intended.
